An exceptional Postal Stationery Envelope (originally U.S.-Commonwealth) uprated and legitimately circulated within Manila on April 1, 1943. Features a rare combination of ordinary postal cancels, a separate “First Day” commemorative mark, and authentic Japanese military censorship.

Franking & Postmark Details:

The cover pays the 12-centavo wartime domestic rate using a spectacular mixed franking:

• 5c Overprinted Indicia: The envelope’s original printed stamp, officially defaced and overprinted with a 5-centavo surcharge by the Japanese Military Administration.
• 2c Green Adhesive Stamp (Mount Mayon): Released on April 1, 1943.
• 5c Brown Adhesive Stamp (Rice Planting): Released on April 1, 1943.
• Important Postal Feature: Unlike standard souvenir covers, all adhesive stamps and the indicia are tied by genuine ordinary Manila daily datestamps (circular date stamps). The official “UNANG ARAW” (First Day of Issue) commemorative mark is struck on the envelope’s body without touching or canceling the stamps, confirming true commercial/ordinary postal usage.

Historical & Philatelic Significance:

This cover represents an authentic, non-favor wartime commercial usage. Prepared on the first day of the new pictorial series, it was processed through the standard post office mailing stream (hence the ordinary cancels) and subjected to formal Japanese Military Censorship. Truly circulated First Day Covers from the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines are significantly scarcer than their uncirculated favor-canceled counterparts.
